In Part 1, I discussed the saying attributed to Ghandi “Be the change you wish to see in the world” and what it means for me. I discussed the power of thoughts and how we can use emotion as an indicator of hidden thought patterns. This is important if we choose to change those thoughts and beliefs to create a different experience for ourselves. In Part 2, we will discuss the energy of emotions and how we can use this energy to help us understand the state of our thoughts and beliefs and then change it to something we prefer.

Emotions are energy and they can be understood on a scale that goes from low vibrational energy to high vibrational energy. Emotions that appear on the lower end of the scale align with despair, sadness, frustration and anger and those that appear on the higher end of the scale align with contentment, happiness and ultimately joy.

Esther Hicks, who channels a group of beings referred to as “Abraham”, provides great guidance (start at 3:40 and listen until 6:40 in the video) on what it means to navigate this scale. There are three key points to remember with this scale:

  1. The first point is that we cannot move along the scale in extremes. Meaning that if we feel fearful or insecure, we cannot jump straight to joy. These emotions are at the bottom of the scale and by the time we get to these emotions, the energy is really moving. Think of it like a whirlpool that gets more intense with its gravitational pull the longer we spend time in that state. We can move ourselves but it is a slow, intentional movement upwards towards a step that feels better and better.

  2. The second point is that our emotions always fluctuate. Emotions are energy in motion so they will always be fluid and subject to change. This is natural so it’s important to allow that flow. This is most important with those lower vibrational emotions so, to the best of our ability, focus on feeling the emotion with the intention of acknowledging them and then releasing them without judgement. These are denser emotions and have more gravity, which tends to keep us vibrating lower for longer.

  3. The third point is that our thoughts determine our emotions so when we want to change how we feel, we need to raise the vibration of our emotions to move up the scale by changing our thoughts. When our thoughts align with a higher vibration, our emotions will follow suit.

Using Emotions as a Guide

So, how can we use emotions to guide our understanding of the quality of our thoughts, and empower ourselves to be more intentional and change our experience? Here is an approach that has helped me:

  1. Thoughts are vibrations that have frequency. Remember, emotions indicate the quality & state of our thoughts. Lower frequency thoughts result in lower frequency emotions & higher frequency thoughts result in higher frequency motions.

  2. The emotional scale acts as a guide. This means we can use it to build awareness so we can begin to notice the quality of our thoughts through how we feel. We often react to our experiences rather than create through intention so whenever we react, we can learn to stop and ask “what am I reacting to? What am I feeling in this moment and what am I thinking in this moment?” Naming emotions helps to acknowledge them, which then allows us to flow the energy to keep it moving. It’s important to welcome our emotions and feel them. Most people spend their lives pushing down or suppressing emotions which stifles the flow of energy and eventually creates issues in our physical body.

  3. Emotions are energy and need to move. So if it stifles & remains stagnant it settles into the physical body & results in disease (think of the word dis-ease, to be out of flow). The seriousness of this depends on how intense the emotion or trauma is and how long it's been suppressed. The most common way this energy moves is through crying. It's a natural release and expression of what our body wants to let go of because the energy is not for our highest good.We can also look to other support and healing practices like Emotional Release, Reiki, Healing Touch, or Body Talk to name a few. These modalities are helpful for moving the energy, clearing the energy and building awareness of the energy.

  4. Silence allows us to connect. We are surrounded by a litany of distractions every day. Spending time in silence helps to quiet the noise and get in touch with what our body is telling us. Meditation helps to ground us in the body and notice where the body is telling us there are energetic issues. We can sit with our emotions and observe them for a greater understanding.

Moving your vibration up

STEP 1: notice your emotions. Whether you catch yourself in a reaction, or you find yourself reviewing something that happened and you are stuck in the drama, stop and notice. Take a deep breath and ask “what is the emotion I’m feeling?”

STEP 2: look at the scale and decide your current set point. Which emotion are you feeling? Where is it on the scale that can help you understand the quality of your vibration? How far down on the scale are you?

STEP 3: determine the thoughts that are creating this emotion for you. What are you thinking about yourself or someone else? How do these thoughts contribute to where you are on the emotional scale?

STEP 4: move to the emotion one up from your set point and start creating thoughts that align to that emotion. Continue to move up and notice how it changes how you feel in your body. Remember, the lower down you are, the harder it is to move so aim for one or two levels above to start.

STEP 5: give yourself grace. There is no judgement required in this process so move forward however you are able in the moment. This takes practice and every single person is navigating this scale every day. You are where you are and that is ok. It’s ok to feel what you feel and respond the way you respond. As Maya Angelou says “when you know better, you do better”. So keep learning!
