Have you ever had a thought enter your head seemingly out of nowhere? Do you ever get a "gut feeling "that you just know something deeply without having heard it or learned it from someone? Some refer to this as intuition or a sixth sense. That visceral reaction we have that provides feedback and information to us in the moment of an experience, this is the voice of our soul.

Our intuition is more than just a primitive signal of fight or flight meant to protect us. It is a wise guide and counsel that we can call on at any time to assist us with our choices. Getting in touch with our intuition takes practice and awareness but is inherent for each one of us. It isn't a special gift meant for the chosen few. We all have it and we all can learn how to use it. We can start by getting to know our physical body better.

Our body sends all sorts of signals to let us know what's happening. We feel pain as a signal to pay attention when something is off. We feel hunger as a sign the body needs fuel. We feel tired as a sign the body needs rest and rejuvenation. Our energy body is closely linked to our physical body. So when there is something out of balance, our energy body can also send us messages by way of our physical senses, like tingling sensations, fluttering in the area above our belly button or shivers not related to temperature. These signals might be different for everyone so it's important to get to know our physical body well. We can do this through the practice of grounding and meditation. It's not a strict practice, just spending time in quiet, observing and noticing. We can do a body scan to pay attention to the state of our muscles and any sensations we experience in the moment. We are surrounded by distractions every day and can lose the ability to not only be present, but also to hear our soul whisper. The more we practice, the more we begin to hear and create a new and different relationship with our body.

Try the Practice

Find a comfortable place to sit (you could even do this standing in line). Close your eyes and settle your body. Place your focus on your tailbone and pay attention to how it feels to be supported by the chair or the floor or the ground (if you are standing, simply focus on your feet).

Now take a deep breath in through your nose. Notice the feel of the air as it passes through your nose. What does it feel like? Continue to breathe slowly in and out and notice how your chest moves. What do you feel? Now move your focus to the top of your head and slowly make your way down your body. What do you notice? Do you sense tension in your muscles? Do you notice pain or tingling? Get to know where you might hold stress and ask Your body to relax. Set the intention of noticing and releasing any energy that might be causing discomfort. Keep scanning until you reach your feet. If at any point you lose focus or begin feeling discomfort, simply return to your breath. This can take as long as you are comfortable. The important takeaway is the information your body just shared with you.

Repeat this scan every few days to continue the practice of getting to know your body. Once you become familiar with how your body communicates with you, the next step is to learn how to respond (more on that in a future article!)

Congratulations! Good on you for practising self-care and honoring the body that carries you through this human experience!
