Why "Self-Care" Isn’t Fixing Your Burnout

Updated: Mar 12

This post acts as the second introductory bridge to of our 12-week Journey to Self-Empowerment—a series designed specifically for Highly Sensitive People (HSPs) ready to stop "people-pleasing" and start reclaiming their energy.

We’ve been told a beautiful lie about self-care.

We’ve been told that if we just buy the right candle, spend twenty minutes in a salt bath, or "treat ourselves" to a fancy coffee, we will magically feel replenished. We do those things, and for a moment, it feels nice. But then Monday morning rolls around, the phone starts ringing, the "Invisible Load" (as we discussed last week) drops back onto our shoulders, and we are just as exhausted as we were before.

If your self-care isn't working, it’s not because you’re doing it wrong. It’s because you’re trying to use self-soothing to fix a boundary problem.

Self-Soothing vs. Self-Care

There is a massive difference between the two, and understanding it is the first step toward true empowerment.

  • Self-Soothing is about comfort. It’s an escape. It’s the wine, the bath, the Netflix binge. It’s designed to help you tolerate a life that is draining you. It’s the "reset" button.

  • Self-Care is about agency. It’s the decision to say "no" to a request that overextends you. It’s the difficult conversation with a partner about household labor. It’s the boundary that protects your sleep. It’s the "stop" button.

You Can’t Out-Bath a Boundary Leak

Think of it this way: If your house is flooding because a pipe burst, you can spend all day mopping the floor (Self-Soothing), but until you turn off the water (Self-Care), you will never be dry.

Most of us are expert moppers. We have the best mops! We have scented mops and luxury mops! But we are terrified to touch the valve. We are afraid that turning off the water will make people mad, or that we won’t know who we are if we aren't constantly "cleaning up" for everyone else.

The Shift: From Survival to Design

The reason I am hosting the Journey to Self-Empowerment starting on March 2nd is that I want you to stop just "surviving" your weeks.

Empowerment isn't something you do on top of your busy life; it’s the way you build your life. It is the realization that you are allowed to have a life that doesn't require a weekend of recovery just to get through it. Trust me! For the last 5 years, I found myself lounging on the couch every night hiding from the world and binging shows because I didn’t have the energy to do what I really wanted, which was to live in joy and connection with others. I didn’t know how to stop, I only knew how to reset.

Your Reflection for the Week

As we head into the final days of February, look at your "Self-Care" habits. Ask yourself:

"Is this helping me recharge so I can go back into the fray, or is this helping me build a life where the fray doesn't consume me?"

Get ready. On March 2nd, we stop mopping. We’re going to find the valve! If you want to join the Journey to Self-Empowerment, sign up on my website.
